Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Ajay Corbyn Willis (nee Bellerose) is the only son and second child born to 80s celebrity power couple, rockstar, Corbyn Bellerose and his gossip columnist wife, Alyssa Kay. They had been rumoured to be having an affair whilst Corbyn was still married to his first wife and once the divorce went through, they eloped to St Tropez and got married. The rumour mill was rife, especially when, nine months later, Ajay's older sister, Candy, arrived and it seemed she would follow in her dad's footsteps with musical talent from a young age. With her own career already waning, Alyssa threw herself into the baby beauty pageant scene with her daughter and became a nightmare pageant mom. When Ajay arrived three years later, Alyssa had little interest in him because she was so focused on Candy winning crown after crown. Ajay's dad tried to be a doting father for all of a year until his own career began to dive and he tried to revive it with a comeback tour. Ajay was left with a nanny in their Hollywood Hills home, but when Ajay was eight years old, Corbyn suffered a minor stroke and it ended his performing career.
With his retirement imminent, Corbyn wanted to move his family to Vermont, somewhere more peaceful for his recuperation but never stopped writing songs. In fact, he became Candy's main song writer when she began a singing career when she was 15 and got sick of pageants, telling her mom to piss off and stop treating her like a show pony. The downside of growing up in the spotlight was exposure to negative behaviour. Ajay never had an urge to be in the spotlight, very much shying away from it being in his sister's shadow. He had musical talent of his own and a wonderful singing voice, but feared being the centre of attention and pretended he couldn't even sing Karaoke once his voice broke. He wanted to be a costume designer for TV, movies, or even theatre, but his mother constantly discouraged it, telling him it was a whimsy and pointless desire. If he didn't have any talent for performing, he should just learn how to wash windows. It was a source of amusement for her, but the straw that broke the camel's back... not only on his marriage to Alyssa but to Ajay's self-esteem.
From around the age of 15, already shy lacking self-confidence, Ajay was constantly compared to his sister, then 18, whose country music singing career had taken off. It triggered an eating disorder in Ajay which began as anorexia and starving himself, feeling ugly and fat compared to his beautiful, blonde, size zero vivacious sister. It soon morphed into bulimia that he hid exceptionally well. But it exacerbated when his father filed for divorce from his mother and she tried to take him back to live in LA with her and his sister. Ajay held firm, and Corbyn was awarded primary custody of him so he could stay in Vermont. He and his father got close in the wake of the separation with only them sharing a large house. But Corbyn met another woman, Sofie, a kindergarten teacher, and fell in love, soon wanting to marry her. Ajay like Sofie and he was happy his dad had another stab at love, but he was 18 by that point and still battling the eating disorder.
Ajay never lost the yearning to be a costume designer, but his self-esteem was low. He didn't think he was good enough. By the end of high school, he had come out as gay to his dad and confessed about the eating disorder. His dad helped him by paying for him to go stay in one of the top eating disorder clinics in the country and following that, he did have a period of remission with the mental illness where his dad and Sofie encouraged him to find a course in college he liked, wherever and whatever he wanted, and he would have their support. Sofie fell pregnant, but unfortunately lost the baby, which was another push for Ajay to seize the bull by the horns and go to college.
He was accepted into the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Costume Design at Central Connecticut State University and completed one year before he started to relapse with the bulimia. His told his dad and Sofie that he was quitting college, but lied to them about it being because he had a job in New York, so he was moving there. He didn't know why he chose New York beyond the fact it was a huge place and he figured it was the best option he had to try to find his place in the world. His dad bought him a small studio apartment near Broadway (assuming his son had a job theatre-related), so he had a leg up. It was just by sheer luck that he randomly applied for a position as Personal Assistant at FABULOUS magazine. He was fashion-conscious himself, probably what could be termed a fashionista in the making. He somehow just clicked with co-owner and co-editor, Gen Hart, and she offered him the job as her PA. There he became close friends with her brother, Paris's PA, Michael.
They worked exceptionally well together and Ajay was sort of like another little brother to her. She trusted him entirely with her business and personal affairs, he never judged her, and kept all her secrets under lock and key. He went everywhere with her and worked with her for four years. Until he suddenly and without warning resigned from the position. He asked her for a few days leave to go visit his dad, but never returned to the job and never offered her an explanation of why he left, keeping his resignation letter short, succinct, and to the point. He removed her Facebook, blocked her number on his phone, and never opened any of her emails. He knew she was probably pissed off at him, but he hadn't had the courage to tell her the truth. Which was that he had fallen into a pretty bad relapse of the bulimia and his dramatic weight loss had been hidden beneath fashionable layers, luckily all the rage. He felt like he was letting her down, and never knew how to tell her he wasn't as brimming with confidence as he pretending to be with her. He didn't want her to think he used her.
What had happened in truth was that Ajay had asked for the leave because he had landed himself in hospital, severely dehydrated and malnourished. He had passed out and fell onto the road and only narrowly missed being run over by a car. In hospital, he met a sweet nurse by the name of Jesse Hartley who was the one who managed to coax Ajay into calling his dad to ask for help. His dad had Ajay transferred to a hospital in Vermont for treatment and it was there that he confessed everything about not having a job at first, but how he still got one and it was perfect. The best he felt in his life. He didn't know what triggered his illness again, but it was the worst he had been in his life. He stayed in Vermont for close to a year, taking a job in a small clothing boutique where he just lived day in, day out. At least, that was until Gen Tweeted a video of her 'son' performing and Ajay had been stunned. Last he knew of Gen, she had been fabulously single, living the high life without a care in the world.
It felt like a sign and even though he had no idea what he was going to do when he got there, he got the train back to New York, without an iota of a clue of what would come next in his life...
